Reading is better than chocolate

My father used to say to me, ‘You’ll never be bored or lonely if you have a good book at your fingertips.’ How right he was. Ever since I was a child, books have given me endless hours of joy, inspiration, hope and strength. Whatever happens in life, there’s always a protagonist who has lived through what I’m experiencing and who can provide insight or solace. A great book is the best treat.

So why not treat yourself to Australia Reads this November? A few months ago when I was asked to be one of their spokespeople, I jumped at the chance. Australia Reads is an annual event to remind Australians of the joys and benefits of reading. The main celebration takes place on 12th November when everyone in the country is invited to stop what they’re doing for one hour to pick up a book and simply read for pleasure. It’s also an opportunity to read aloud to a young child, an elderly person or someone who has not been afforded the privilege of literacy. Click here to read my top five brain-benefits of reading and visit the website australiareads.org.au to find out about other activities and virtual events.

Please forward this Health-e-Byte to anyone who might like to get involved with Australia Reads.
